Arts Undergraduate Scholarships & Mentorships
These scholarships and mentorships are available to students who have been admitted to the Com Arts major.
Christopher Neal Heinlein Memorial Scholarships
Christopher Neal Heinlein Memorial Scholarships are available to Communication Arts majors who will be continuing students in the Fall of 2009. Qualified undergraduates majors may nominate themselves or may be nominated by a member of the Communication Arts faculty or staff. Students who come from urban areas of the eastern coast will be given preference.
Scholarships will be granted based on the following criteria:
- Demonstrated good nature, kindness, humor, hard work, arts interest, and personableness.
- Academic/artistic achievement
- Financial need
The awards are scholarships, collectible only in the beginning of Fall semester, 2009. They will affect students’ existing financial aid packages. Application materials will be available at the start of the spring semester.
Charline M. Wackman Awards
The Charline M. Wackman Awards are available to Communication Arts majors who will be continuing students in the Fall of 2009. Qualified undergraduate majors may nominate themselves or be nominated by a member of the Communication Arts faculty or staff. Only "bona fide residents of the State of Wisconsin" are eligible.
Awards will be granted for scholarship, superior projects, and service to the department. Apply under one of the following categories:
- Scholarship: Juniors or seniors who need at least one semester of course work before graduation. The two criteria are financial need and a record of high academic achievement. Any com arts major with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater may apply.
- A proposal of a superior project: scholarly (senior thesis or other academic work), or artistic performance (film or video production or creative writing).
- Service to the department and its mission in the performance of paid or volunteer duties, in initiating or sponsoring activities, in providing leadership, or in otherwise promoting the department's objectives and mission.

Kevin M. Anderson Memorial Film Mentorship
The Kevin M. Anderson Memorial Film Mentorship provides a currently enrolled undergraduate student from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with the opportunity to spend one summer in Los Angeles, CA working under a mentor/mentors for various film/TV production companies. The student will have direct exposure to all aspects of film production, networking opportunities, and will be given a stipend.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
- 3.0 or higher GPA
- Junior or senior standing at time of application
- Strong and provable interest in film industry, such as completing radio, television, and film courses in Communication Arts
- Willing to relocate to Los Angeles for summer 2009
Additional Details and Expectations:
The mentorship will be 8-10 weeks in length and the recipient will work at least 30 hours per week under a mentor in the production company. The recipient will “check-in” at least monthly with Roni Menendez, Katie Fetting and/or Meta Valentic.
The following experiences can be provided and will be adjusted to fit the recipient’s interests:
- Writing script coverage
- Attending at least two pitch meetings with writers
- Writing character breakdowns and accurate, effective synopses
- Meeting with a cross section of people in the Entertainment Industry
- Learning the major agencies
- Spending at least one day “in production” on a motion picture set
The recipient, upon completion of the mentorship, will write an 8-10 page, double-spaced paper explaining the development process as s/he now understands it; and a 3-5 page, double-spaced paper on his or her experience in this program and what could be improved in the future.
Application Materials (subject to change):
- Completed application form.
- Current UW transcript. Campus copies are available at the Registrar’s Office, 21 N. Park St., free of charge.
- 1 page, single-spaced autobiography (include any previous film experience/work)
- 1 page, single-spaced essay on your interest in the film business
- List of your 10 favorite movies
- 1–2 page, single-spaced paper on your opinion of the WORST movie made in the past 10 years and how you would have improved it
Application materials will be due in February 2009.
Communications Industry Summer Internship Award
The Communications Industry Summer Internship Award provides a $5000 scholarship to help a Communication Arts major participate in a summer internship with a business or non-profit organization in the fields of media communication or entertainment located in New York or Los Angeles. This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Janet and Edward Greenberg. Mr. Greenberg received his master’s degree from the Department of Communication Arts.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be a declared Communication Arts major with junior or senior standing and continuing in the fall.
- Have applied for, or been accepted into a summer internship program.
- To qualify, the program must last at least 6 weeks in length and require 30-40 hours per week for a minimum total of 240 hours of work.
Application materials:
- Applications will be available in December.
- Personal statement (one page maximum) describing:
- how the internship will help you attain your personal and professional goals
- extent of your financial need
- Proof of the internship.
- If you have already been accepted for an internship, please provide a letter from the company or organization which confirms acceptance to the internship, a description of the duties and responsibilities, the time period and hours of the internship, and the amount of pay or stipend being provided.
- If your application is still pending, provide a copy of the completed application, a description of the duties and responsibilities, the time period and hours of the internship, and the amount of pay or stipend being provided. You may submit information for a maximum of five pening internships. Official confirmation of the internship must be received no later than May 1, 2009.
- Current campus copy of your UW transcript. Available at the Registrar’s Office, 21 N. Park St. free of charge.
- Resumé.
- Letter of recommendation from a professor, employer, or professional contact.
Application deadline: End of March
Award recipient:
The award recipient must provide confirmation to the Department for the internship identified in the application by May 1, 2009. If confirmation is not received by May 1, the award will go to an alternate candidate.
Academic Credit: Credit for the internship will need to be arranged separately.
